‘It’s a godsend’: AARP donates $45k to organizations targeting flood relief
Sep. 20, 2022 at 8:10 PM EDT PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - As organizations across the region work to be part of the relief efforts following the late-July floods, AARP is stepping in to target its demographic by donating $45,000 to the mission. AARP Kentucky representatives visited Prestonsburg Tuesday, giving four checks to support Eastern Kentucky efforts. Big Sandy Area Development District, Kentucky River Area Development District, and AppalReD Legal Aid each received $10,000, while God’s Pantry Food Bank received $15,000.

AppalReD Legal Aid to Host Legal Clinic for Flood Survivors on Oct 5
AppalReD Legal Aid is holding a legal clinic to assist flood survivors with their disaster-related legal issues, such as FEMA appeals, on Wednesday, October 5th from 9:00am to 4:00pm at CANE Kitchen in the old Whitesburg High School building in Whitesburg, Kentucky (38 College Drive, Whitesburg, KY 41858).  AppalReD attorneys will be on site to assist existing clients and as many new clients as possible.  If you are not an existing client, we encourage you to first call our flood hotline at 1(844) 478-0099 to complete an intake and ensure that we are able to help.

This is a FREE pro se (do it yourself) clinic that will be held virtually on Zoom from 1:00 pm-4:00 pm. The Pro Se Family Law Clinic is available for persons from any county in our service area, will be limited to 20 participants and is available for both clients with or without children of the marriage. It will address issues of divorce, custody, and family law. You must register by calling our Central Intake line at 1-866-277-5733.

Amid a housing crisis, advocates push for tenants' rights

Those evictions equate to approximately 559 local people left in a potentially unstable or unsuitable housing situation. Affordable housing experts say the situation may be worsening.
