A baby born today to parents in Wolfe County can expect to live eight years less than a baby born in Fayette County.
The reason is that while Campton and Lexington are just an hour apart, they differ significantly in ways that have an impact on health and how long people live, such as education levels, poverty level, opportunities to be physically active and access to health care, according to a researcher who mapped life expectancy in the state.

PRESTONSBIRG – AppalReD staff, board members past and present, and other friends will come to Prestonsburg on Saturday, June 18 for a 45th anniversary celebration. AppalReD staff provides free legal services in civil cases to low income citizens in 37 eastern and south central Kentucky counties through a network of six offices. AppalReD offices are located in Barbourville, Hazard, Pikeville, Prestonsburg, Richmond and Somerset. AppalReD’s administrative office is in Prestonsburg.

The Appalachian Research and Defense Fund hosted gatherings on Saturday for former attorneys, staff, and friends of the organization, to celebrate the institution’s 45th anniversary.
At the dinner, AppalReD’s current director, Robert Johns, who has been in the position for the past year and a half, took the opportunity to thank everyone who built AppalReD into its current status as a respected public service organization.

Appalachian HOPE is an effort to provide financial assistance to domestic violence victims transitioning into safe housing.
Funding for Appalachian HOPE is provided to Appalachian Research and Defense Fund of Kentucky, Inc. (AppalReD) through the Eastern Kentucky United Methodist Health, Education & Welfare Fund.
