It can be very stressful when you owe debts that you can’t pay. However, there are laws that protect you and some of your property from your creditors.
Bankruptcy is a federal court process to help people get a fresh financial start. It works by getting rid of debt they can’t manage or making arrangements to repay unmanageable debt. This is called “discharging debt.” The person filing for bankruptcy is called the ‘debtor’ and the people or businesses owed money to are called ‘creditors.’
Kentucky Law Protects
Kentucky Law (KRS 383.300) protects survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking who have protective orders AND entered into or renewed a lease on or after June 29, 2017.
This is a free STATEWIDE clinic that will be held online. To register visit this link.
Once you sign up we will receive a Zoom link to confirm your spot. After the virtual clinic, Goodwill will request your unofficial background records from the Administrative Office of the Court for the purpose of expungement. A copy of your background will be provided to AppalReD Legal Aid (or your area's legal aid), so they will be able to go over it with you to determine what is eligible for expungement.
VAWA Protects
VAWA is a law that protects survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking from discrimination by certain federally funded housing providers. These protections apply even if you don't qualify for protection under Kentucky law (ie. do not have a protective order).
