Cynthia Elliott
After completing a nationwide search, The Appalachian Research and Defense Fund of Kentucky (AppalRed) has selected Cynthia Elliott as its new
Executive Director, making her the first-ever African-American leader of a Kentucky legal services program.

Elliott led AppalRed’s Breathitt County office from 1990 to 2001 before going to work for Kentucky’s Department
of Public Advocacy. She later served as Managing Attorney for Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, a non-LSC
funded legal services program serving 32 northwest and western Ohio counties.
AppalReD Success Stories
In 30 years of providing legal services to the citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky,
AppalReD has participated in many cases that have not only protected the immediate interest of
our clients but also improved the lives of the citizens of Kentucky. While there are many success
stories that we could mention on this page, we have decided to highlight our successes throughout the
website.
The blue area on the left of the page is used to highlight different successes that AppalReD has had in
defending the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness of our clients. Many of these success stories are found in the
What We Do portion of this website. We hope these stories provide you insight into our mission, our services,
our community, and our staff.
