Divorce Ends
Abuse
A woman came to AppalReD for help obtaining a divorce from her husband of 12 years. The client had
received a DVO in another county after her husband had beaten her in front of their children and threatened to
kill them. They had been separated for 4 years due to the domestic violence. The client was afraid to file
for a divorce and to ask for any child support because she was afraid he would be able to find her and the
children or receive visitation.

AppalReD representatives explained to the client that child support and
visitation were not related and encouraged her to move forward with the divorce. AppalReD helped the client
obtain a divorce in a county other than the client’s county of residence and to receive sole custody of the
children with child support set at $195/month.
Divorce
AppalRed attorneys will represent clients in divorce proceedings in cases of domestic violence or other extraordinary situations. While AppalReD cannot
handle every divorce, we do provide self help (pro se) documents to help you file for divorce without the assistance of a lawyer.
In rare cases, a client may be eligible for an annulment, which “undo” the marriage and, from a legal perspective, never existed.
AppalReD can assist qualified clients in getting annulments as well as divorces.
